Selling Christmas trees on the streets is not an easy job. For one thing, at the end of the day whether you've ended not selling close to what you anticipated, that doesn't take away the fact that you still had the responsibility to be standing out safeguarding your product in the freezing cold during the wee hours of the night.
Cody has been doing it for a couple of years. They're situated at the corner of Cypress Hills and Myrtle Ave in Ridgewood, Queens. It's difficult to miss them. Serving as a backdrop to their trees all varying in sizes is Rite-Aid.
I introduced myself while handing Cody my business card and I was upfront on how it may seem like an unusual request but that I was interested in capturing a portrait of him. He chuckled and excused himself for having just woken up.
A couple of days after I met Cody, I stumbled across a series of portraits by New York based photographer Joseph Holmes which he shot back in 2010 where he coincidently enough featured Xmas Tree Vendors around New York. Obviously a project like this has been done already but it just shows that I'm not the only person who's interet gravitates more towards people who are not necessarily always seeking the attention.
