Wander Through Fort San Cristobal, Puerto Rico

Nearly everyone references Fort El Morro as a point of attraction while visiting Old San Juan but I also highly suggest walking the mile towards Fort San Cristobal as you go through La Perla district, which is said by some to be a "slum" but we felt safe walking by even after dark. San Cristobal was constructed by the Spanish for defense purposes and stands on a place that offers some dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The fort is absolutely a well preserved place to explore and let your imagination run wild and for an admissions fee of $3, you practically can't go wrong. As with most landmarks, there are guided tours available but I preferred to wander unchaperoned throughout the labyrinth of walls, moats and walkways that make up the massive ramparts past it.
