I think many people mistake taking pictures of exotic and beautiful places as being committed but it’s not enough just to travel and take pretty images. You have to go deep and show something original and unexpected, something that teaches and surprises.

Ami Vitale’s advice for aspiring journalists and photographers on a recent interview for Proof Magazine. In photography, I’ve found that the most simplistic advice are among the most profound and yet somehow the most difficult to pull off. Does that make any sense? Off the top of my head I can’t recall “the best photography advice” I’ve ever received but if I had to lie about having gotten one, it would fall along the lines on what Ami pointed at. The more you surprise people with what you shoot the bigger the impact and higher the value.
