Getting better as a photographer has as much to do with not taking pictures as with taking them. Just because your digital camera gives you the freedom to take pictures of everything doesn’t mean you have to.

Great advice from Michael David Murphy on what's generally the norm when you're vacationing and have a camera with you. For the most part, you're encouraged to over-shoot a bit so as to have a variety of photos to choose from when you edit but others would argue that if you shoot hundreds of frames a day, that you’re probably not putting much thought into the photos. Everyone’s approach is different but during our recent trip to Washington, I admit to photographing very sporadically despite the primary purpose of the trip being to explore the city through photography.
