Zack Arias list his 3 objectives for even devoting time towards personal photographic projects:
- To hone my skills
- To photograph a subject or topic that I’m not being hired to photograph
- To promote myself as a photographer to be hired for other projects
I highly suggest reading the rest of his commentary on the topic. I would say I can relate to all of his points with the exception of the word hired. I don’t dedicate the hours to photographing with hopes to obtain gigs from it. If it happens then that’s another story but my drive is simple. I completely enjoy the process of creating and documenting and it’s something that I will continue to do regardless of whether I will ever see a penny from it. In fact, I think it would be even more awesome if I could give back through my work rather than feel that I need to be compensated for it.
